Testing for a career firefighter position is competitive. Doing your homework and being prepared is a must. The firefighter interview process is often, for most recruit candidates, the most challenging part of the testing process. These 20 Firefighter Interview questions will help you prepare for the firefighter interview.

During my career in the fire service, I sat on many interview panels. I also developed and coordinated the interview process for my department. I have heard just about every possible answer to these and other questions, both good and bad.

In this article the discussion will focus on many typical types of firefighter interview questions, giving examples of quality answers to these questions. I want to stress that these examples are just that. You, as the candidate, must make your answers personal to you. “Canned” answers are easy to spot and will severely impact your interview in a negative way.

Firefighter Interview Preparation

Many Firefighter interview questions will follow the format of these example questions. However, they will usually have a direct correlation to the department you are applying for. This is why it is very important to learn as much as you can about the department. For example, is this hiring process due to adding an additional station or is it because they are expanding the role of the department by including a fire base ambulance service.

Make it your response to the questions.

Make your responses personal to you and unique to the interview panel if possible. This may sound simple but once you really sit down and think about your answers you may be surprised at how you may struggle. When writing this article, I struggled in even giving examples of answers to these questions, why? By giving “the answers” to you, there will be a temptation to model your answer to the question around what is provided here instead of giving an honest personal answer.

I cannot stress enough, think about these questions as they relate to you and your life experiences. Answers that stand out are ones that present you and who you are. Coming up with “canned replies” like “Integrity is doing the right thing even when no one is watching”, will not separate you from the pack. I have heard that answer dozens of times. What the interview panel wants to hear is what Integrity means to you, and how you have shown integrity in your life. For example, an answer that might stand out is: “Integrity to me is standing by my team or coworker and accepting accolades as well and criticism as a team and supporting everyone on the team.” Then giving a personal example.
